Cracking breaks large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more useful molecules. The most important results of this stage are ethylene and propylene, which are simple molecules that act as the fundamental building blocks of many common plastics.

Step 3: Polymerisation – Forming Plastic

Once ethylene, propylene, and similar compounds are produced, they undergo polymerisation. This is a chemical reaction that links many small molecules (monomers) together into long chains known as polymers.

These polymers form the basis of materials such as:

  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Polystyrene (PS)

At this stage, the material usually appears as small plastic pellets or resin granules.

Step 4: Shaping and Manufacturing

Plastic pellets are then supplied to manufacturers, where they are melted and shaped into finished products. Common manufacturing methods include:

  • Injection moulding
  • Blow moulding
  • Extrusion
  • Thermoforming

This stage determines the final form and function of the product, whether it’s packaging, piping, containers, or components used in construction and industry.
